I remember that back in the day I played this and Die Hard Trilogy pretty much all the time, I finished both countless times, I still think they're both amazing games (for sure one of my all-time favourites), and not knowing other movie-based games, I was wondering why people always said that movie games are bad. It's uber-silly, but the game itself is super fun moreover, it has FANTASTIC music that even my wife started to unwillingly hum. "Ripley, go and clear that area so the marines can proceed." WHAT?! Shouldn't the marines be clearing the way for me? "Ripley, the colonists have been impregnated, go kill them all." WOW, that's cold, but also: didn't you want to get someone impregnated, Burke? Why not take one of them? It's illegal and has to be kept secret.Īnd they try to acquire samples completely openly.Īnyway, I love the mission briefings too.

You must fight the W-Y because, even though they're technically on your side (or Burke's side), as they don't know your mission. The Bio-Weapons Division is there to collect samples, and you are there only to become impregnated so Burke can smuggle the alien through the ICC quarantine. It might be because I didn't speak English much when I was younger, but I hadn't noticed up until now that they try to explain why you fight W-Y's forces, even though you are still being (mis)led by Burke. However, the actual story is extremely silly and it's only now that it occured to me. It's on par with DN3D's visual design, it's perfect. I could explore the levels for hours imagining how life looked in them before the aliens came.

This game is full of fan love and has some amazing visual storytelling. It even duplicates Cameron's way of showing shotgun blasts, where you have one white frame added to add to the impact! Wow! Today, I see that it has 3D objects, like tables (which were impossible in Doom), that it has cleverly designed textures that make it look almost like 3D-accelerated despite running on PSX, that it has awesome lighting effects with color lighting and smooth light/dark transitions. It had great atmosphere and was great at dropping familiar visual elements from the movies in a simplified but recognizable form. Back then, in the era of Quake, it looked fine. And that goes for the PSX version, as I've never played it on PC.įirst of all, this 1996 game is now much more impressive technically to me than it was right after release. Being a fan of 2.5D shooters - Doom, DN3D and so on - I have to say that Alien Trilogy is absolutely brilliant. That's great, because I avoided replaying it out of fear that I'd get disappointed. It's not really rediscovering - I'm playing it for the first time in maybe 10 years, but around 2000, when I was a teen, I used to play this game so much that I still have it burnt into my brain.
